Petit, Charles Francis -- Born in Ventura, California, on October 25, 1910. Passed away peacefully on February 13, 2005, in Palo Alto at the age of 94. Frank, as he was known to his many friends, led a wonderful life. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University and then attended Harvard Law School. It was back east that he met the girl of his dreams, Margaret Reimer. They waited to marry because, due to the depression, he felt he could not support her in proper style. After their marriage they moved to Los Angeles, and subsequently Pasadena. He first practiced law with O'Melveny & Meyers and later with Wood, Crump, & Rogers. In 1944 he left the active practice of law for business, joining Harvill Corporation and then Southwest Products in Duarte. After retiring from business in the late 1960's, he became active at La Vina Hospital for respiratory diseases in Altadena, serving first on the board and then as its president. He was also part of the citrus industry. He never forgot his Ventura farming roots and, from the 1940's on, became an avid orange grower. Through the decades he spent much time planning, fretting, and rejoicing over the crops, first on the Reimer Petit Ranch and then, additionally, the C.W. Petit Ranch. To the end, he was interested in the happenings on both ranches. Frank was an excellent tennis player and devoted fly fisherman for many years, but really excelled in lawn bowling. He won the American Lawn Bowls Association National Open Singles Championship in 1974. In 1984 he was named Team Manager of the American Lawn Bowling Association World Bowls Team, which competed in Aberdeen, Scotland. In 1985, the Pasadena Lawn Bowling Club started the Frank Petit California Pairs Championships Tournament in his honor. In March, 1998, he and Margaret moved to Palo Alto to be closer to their children. He spent his last years quietly, reading voraciously and enjoying his family and new friends. He had a sunny disposition and delighted in people from all walks of life. In return he was much loved and his kindness, graciousness, and gentle humor will be both missed and remembered by all. Frank was predeceased by Margaret, his sweetheart and wife of sixty-one years. Survivors include his brother Donald Petit of La Canada-Flintridge, California; sister Janice Willis of Ventura, California; son Wesley Petit of San Mateo, California; daughter Anne Christ of Kensington, California; and grandsons Steven Petit and Jeffrey Petit. A service will be held in Ventura at the Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura on March 23, at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Stanford University for the Undergraduate Scholarship Fund, to the Ventura County Museum of History and Art, or to a charity of the giver's choice.
