“The point is, really, does music exist as a (written) note or does it take its point of beginning, it’s genesis, from somewhere else? One of the distractions (in the music) has been the idea of written music. It divides the senses, though some people might say it increases the options. But, I mean, if you look at a piece of music – notes – that means your eye must be directed outside the body.”Cecil Taylor“Playing with Cecil made me think differently about what music’s about. It’s not about any cycle of fifths, it’s about sound.” Jimmy Lyons Archival Image by Žiga KoritnikCecil Taylor, minutes after his arrivalSkopje Jazz Festival / 2002North MacedoniaKodak T-Max 3200 film

I had a 29 year association with Cecil and learned more than I would have if I had gone to three conservatories. Absolutely brilliant man.

Have just learned that Alex Gitterman has died. To say that he had a profound influence on me would be an understatement. It is worth saying that we stayed in touch, and that Professor Gitterman always made time to see me and to answer questions about my practice long after I graduated. Words fail me at the moment, so I am sharing a post from December 2015, written just after completing a semester in his classroom at the UConn School of Social Work.May his memory be for a blessing.::: ::: ::: :::“Your authority comes from your capacity."Alex Gitterman, Ed DJust had the final class of my Micro Field Practice course with Alex Gitterman. This has been a truly remarkable experience on several levels, and the collegiality in the class is such that we all agreed to share emails and continue the sharing that our professor led us in to. None of us wanted the course to be over. At the end of class today, Alex asked permission to embrace each of us as a parting gesture. When it was my turn, we shared a warm hug and then he looked at me and said, softly, that he has wanted to hear about, to see me explore how the music - the art and discipline that I practice - might be integrated into my social work practice. Of course the connections are many, and I have had similar thoughts all term long in this course for a range of reasons, not least of which is the power of the relational. Alex is also the first professor that I have had whose writing and commentary make it clear that a good social worker is creative, that the work is an art, and that we should all embrace and practice improvisation. The balance of this day will be spent editing and adding to my final paper for Professor Gitterman, and I plan also to respond to, in a small essay, the query that he shared with me today.Feeling thankful for the gift of sitting regularly with elders who share freely of their knowledge and experience, and who welcome us as colleagues. Had not realized how much I miss this sort of learning. Brings Bill Dixon to mind.#thankfulforthislifewelivetogether
