preme Court told lower courts Monday to restudy seven disputes over punitive damages including huge awards against the Hare Krishna religion and the Church of Scientology The court in each case ordered lower courts to reconsider their rulings in light of the decision earlier this month that refused to set constitutional lim its on the size of such awards in personal injury lawsuits The court let stand two puni tive damage awards They are: A $600000 award against the General American Life Insur ance Co in a fraud suit from Mobile Ala Brad Simmons sued the insurance firm after being refused payment on a $10000 burial policy for his deceased wife A $750000 verdict against the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co in a 1986 fraud suit from Marion County Ala The actual damages suffered by Wil liam Collins were between $1300 and $1800 At stake in the Krishna case is a $5 million judgment that could force the religious sect to sell five Hare Krishna temples across the country and in Canada The other punitive damage cases acted on Monday included: A $500000 award won by Patricia Eichenseer of Westville Miss who waited more than three years for her insurance company to pay off a $6658 claim A $400000 award won by David Jordan who lost $792350 due to the misrepresen tations of a commodities futures broker in Kansas City Mo A $14 million award levied against the Gwinnett County Ga Hospital Authority in the case of William a severely burned accident victim who died His family alleges negligence A $2 million award assessed against Pacific Lighting Corp and its two former real estate developer subsidiaries in a 1983 broken contract suit filed by a California real estate broker The state jury also awarded $558000 in compensatory damages A $15 million award in favor of a
